About Our District

Geneseo Community Unit School District #228 is a K-12 district that was formed in 1949. It assumed its current 261 square mile area in 1988 with the annexation of the former Atkinson School District.

The District operates five schools plus the Unit Office. All schools are located within the Geneseo city limits. Students in grades K-5 attend elementary schools in the District. Geneseo Middle School serves grades 6, 7, and 8, while Geneseo High School serves grades 9-12.

The District serves approximately 2,700 students, ages 3 to 18. The staff includes over 160 certified teachers, 143 support staff, and 11 administrators. A majority of the certified staff has advanced degrees.

Special programs in the district begin with the Ladders to Learning program for 3 to 5 year old children. The District also supports an early childhood (ECE) program for 3 to 5 year olds. Special Education programs are offered at all levels. Title 1 Reading services are provided to elementary students.Accelerated programs are offered in the core content areas of Math, Science, Social Studies and English in grades 6-12. Art, music, and physical education are taught by certified specialists in all grades.

The Geneseo Schools maintain three elementary schools: Millikin Elementary School, Southwest Elementary School, and Northside Elementary School. The Ladders to Learning Pre-School and ECE programs are also housed within the elementary buildings.

The middle school program provides a transition from the elementary to the high school. Geneseo Middle School serves over 640 students divided into "houses" to increase student/teacher interaction. Students are offered electives in music, art, technology, and family and consumer science.

Geneseo High School offers a wide variety of courses in the vocational/technical, academic, and fine arts disciplines. Students have the opportunity to avail themselves of not only core academic classes, but also a wide-ranging selection of elective courses to meet students' particular interests and career goals. Geneseo High School's extra-curricular programs in music and athletics are known throughout the State of Illinois for their excellence.

SUPERINTENDENT MESSAGE:
While California previously held the mythical title of “most challenged state”, Illinois has seemingly moved into that first place role. What the General Assembly and our Governor has done to its citizens over the past several years has been called unconscienable. This New York Times article features Comptroller Hynes, who seems to carry the same philosophy as many others, that Illinois cannot “cut” their way out of this deficit…. if “cutting programs” is the only method employed.

Online Registration for all returning students will re-open August 2-9, 2010 for parents who missed the original online registration dates.  For those returning students with no computer access at home, online registration may be completed in the Middle School computer lab Aug. 9th between the hours of noon and 7 PM.

Public Notice Geneseo Community Unit School District #228 will be conducting a public hearing to hear input regarding a proposed modification of the Illinois School Code for student attendance on certain school holidays in accordance with Section 24-2 of the School Code [105 ILCS 5/24-2]. Public Act 96-640 provides that a school board is authorized to hold school or schedule teachers’ institutes, parent-teacher conferences, or staff development activities on the following legal school holidays: the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; the birthday of President Abraham Lincoln; the birthday of Casimir Pulaski; Columbus Day; and Veterans’ Day. The hearing will be held at the District Office, 209 S. College Avenue, Geneseo, IL on Thursday, August 12, 2010, at 6:30 p.m.
